There are many steps in a good skincare regimen. Although many steps are important, two are essential: using a sunscreen, and cleansing.
This post specifically talks about makeup and sunscreen removal.
This article is an extension of the pre-wedding skincare crash course.
Makeup & sunscreen removal (part 1)
Why cleanse?
Proper cleansing removes makeup, sunscreen (which is often water insoluble), dead skin cells, dirt and other impurities from the surface of the skin to prevent clogged pores, which may eventually lead to breakouts and other skin problems.
How often?
A good skincare regimen consists of cleansing your skin twice a day, morning and night. If you have been wearing sunscreen or makeup, cleanse your skin properly with a specially designed makeup remover at the end of the day.
Micellar water
Micellar water looks just like water, but it contains tiny micelles suspended in water. A micelle is an aggregate of surfactant molecule that has cleansing function. Micellar water can gently remove light makeup, dirt and oil. It can be used on the entire face. However, it may not be effective in removing heavy and water-proof eye makeup.
A good micellar water does not leave a residue. This type of micellar water is also useful to correct makeup application or to clean up smudged eyeliner or mascara.
To use, soak a cotton pad with micellar water. Press the cotton pad against the skin for a few seconds to allow the makeup to dissolve, then gently wipe the makeup away. Repeat if necessary.
Some micellar water may leave a residue on the skin, so a second cleanse with another cleanser would be necessary.

Eyes and lips makeup remover
These makeup removers are specifically designed for the delicate and sensitive eyes and lips areas. If you choose a bi-phase makeup remover (consists of an oily top layer and an aqueous bottom layer), they can remove waterproof makeup gently and effectively.
To use, soak a cotton pad with makeup remover. Press the cotton pad against eye or lip for a few seconds to allow the makeup to dissolve, then gently wipe the makeup away. Repeat if necessary. Follow up with a second cleanser to remove any oily residue.

Makeup removing wipes
Makeup removing wipes are towelettes pre-soaked in makeup removing cleansers. They are convenient, quick and easy - great for traveling, too.
Wipes are not the most thorough form of cleansing. I would recommend to follow up with a facial cleanser for a proper cleanse, preferably in that evening but if not, the next morning. The wiping action can cause a lot of pulling, tugging and rubbing of the skin - which may speed up the formation of fine lines and wrinkles (gasp!). They should not be a regular step in your skincare regimen - use only "when necessary".

In part 2 of this blog post, I will go on to explain what are cleansing oils, cleansing balms, and the double cleansing method.
