In this series of blog posts I would like to share some practical skincare tips with you so you can look your best on one of the most important days of your life. I can go on and on for a few days on this topic, but in this post I will summarise the main points in a few paragraphs.
Daily regimen
Develop a daily regimen which you would follow twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening. Bridal skin preparation is all about hydration and targeting any specific concerns. Instead of "cleanse, tone, moisturise" which most articles would suggest, I recommend "cleanse, serum, moisturise" as the bare minimum - although, feel free to add a toning step if you wish to.
You should use products suitable for your skin type. However, these few tips apply to most skin types:
- If you have been wearing makeup, "double cleanse" in the evening. The first cleanse removes the makeup, and the second cleanse is the thorough cleanse that removes all the other impurities.
- Focus on hydration. Even oily skin will benefit from hydration. Choose a serum containing hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate.
- Wear SPF everyday. It helps to minimise the drying and aging effects of UV rays. Find out more about sunscreens here.
- Avoid ethanol (often listed as alcohol denat. or SD alcohol as an ingredient) if possible. When present in high concentration it can be drying to the skin.
Do a mask every day
A mask is an intensive treatment for your skin. Usually people think about masks as a once-a-week thing, but if you want your skin in top condition on your wedding day, you should start doing your mask daily. It is not a typo - I really mean daily. The mask should fit into your evening regimen between cleansing and serum application (unless you have time to fit one in in the morning as well!). You can alternate between sheet masks and cream masks if you like. Again, focus on hydration, and any other specific concerns you would like to address.
Moisturise the eye area
Personally, I use an eye cream twice a day, but an eye cream is not strictly necessary. The key is to moisturise the eye area. If your moisturiser is safe to use around the delicate eye area, you can simply extend your moisturiser there. Keeping your under-eye area hydrated will reduce the appearance of fine lines, so when we need to pile on concealer to cover any dark circles, the product won't settle into the lines.
Exfoliate
Exfoliation speeds up skin cell turnover. It also removes the surface layer of dead skin cells, making other skincare products penetrate better into the skin. I recommend exfoliating once to three times a week, depending on your skin type. Broadly speaking, there are 2 different types of exfoliants which I have explained in this post here.
Drink lots of water
I mean, lots. All other body parts need water too, only the excess goes to the skin.
See a professional
If getting a facial done every 4-6 weeks is something you can budget for, it will be very beneficial for your skin. Start asap, and the last treatment should be done at least 2 weeks before the wedding day to avoid any unsettled redness on the day. Your beauty therapist will also be able to customise a skincare regimen suitable for your skin type.
Do not try anything new in the month before your wedding
Even the most resilient skin may react to an ingredient you have not used previously. Do not take any risk close to your special day.
