In our bridal skincare crash course we asked you to wear sunscreen every day. But you have probably also heard that wearing sunscreen under your makeup makes your makeup look bad. Is it a myth? Can you actually wear sunscreen under makeup?
The two types of sunscreens
Broadly speaking, there are two different types of sunscreens.
Physical sunscreens - they work by forming a physical barrier on skin and reflect away harmful UV rays like a mirror.
Common physical sunscreen ingredients include:
- zinc oxide
- titanium dioxide
Chemical sunscreens - they protect skin by absorbing the UV rays (via chemical reactions) and diffuse the energy as heat.
Common chemical sunscreen ingredients include:
- oxybenzone
- avobenzone
- octinoxate
- octisalate
- octocrylene
- homosalate
Chemical sunscreens do not affect makeup
Because physical sunscreens reflect light, they could cause problems in photos. After physical sunscreen is applied, light bounces back from your skin in all directions. This is particularly problematic if photos are taken with flash. You may look shiny, flat and/or pale.
On the other hand, chemical sunscreens do not affect the look of makeup. Therefore it can be used under makeup and there is no need to worry about flash photography. However, chemical sunscreens are more likely to cause irritation (especial to those with sensitive skin). It would be wise to test it out on your skin before using it on the wedding day.
