Getting your makeup done but worried about your sensitive skin? Here's what you could do.
Try to identify what your skin is sensitive to
"Sensitive skin" is not really a skin type, nor is it a medical diagnosis of a specific condition. People generally identify themselves as having "sensitive skin" if their skin is easily irritated. It is important to remember that different people will react differently to different triggers. Your makeup artist can make a judgement of what not to use only if you can find out what exactly your skin reacts to.
Is it a particular ingredient that your skin has reacted to in the past? For example, alcohol (alcohol denat.), sodium lauryl sulfate, and some of the ingredients found in a chemical sunscreen (such as avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone) have been commonly reported as triggers for sensitive skin.
On the other hand, you my find that a particular brand of beauty products keep giving you problems. In this case, this brand may be using a common ingredient across their products that your skin does not agree with.
Your skin is less likely to react to makeup products compared to skincare products
Compared to skincare products, makeup products are usually less likely to cause problems. This is because skincare products contain active ingredients that are designed to bring about a "change" in the skin, whereas makeup products are less active. That said, to be on the safe side, you should consider bringing your own products, or booking a makeup trial beforehand.
Bring your own products
If you cannot identify a particular ingredient or product that your skin reacts to, you can bring along a product that you have tried and tested. For example, your own primer, foundation or mascara.
One product that we highly encourage you to test out beforehand is your sunscreen. Check out our tip sheet on choosing the right sunscreen to use under makeup.
Book a trial beforehand
If you are still worried that your makeup artist's professional products may not agree with your skin, book in a trial beforehand. This way, your skin will have a prior exposure to all the products that your makeup artist will be using on the special day to avoid unwanted surprises.
