Cleansers for combination / oily skin
So the saying goes, makeup only looks as good as the skin is. This week we are coming back to talk about your skin again. This post is the last part of our cleansing series - cleansing for combination and oily skin types.
Don't miss our other posts in this series:
Cleansing goals for combination & oily skin
If you have oily skin, it means that your skin is producing excessive oil. In the case of combination skin, your skin is producing excessive oil in some places, but not enough on the other. Skin types can change with the change in age, climate, and use of products. The cleansing goal for combination and oily skin types is to re-balance the oil production in the skin.
Re-balance oil production
A common mistake for people with oily or combination skin is to use cleansers that are way to harsh for skin. It may feel good for a few seconds that your skin is "squeaky clean", but this is actually not good for you. Over-stripping the skin of natural oil will cause the skin to think that it is not producing enough oil, making it to produce even more oil to over-compensate the loss. It makes the skin to enter a never-ending cycle to produce excessive oil.
Remove makeup using cleansing oil
It is a common misconception that cleansing oil is not suitable for oily skin types. Actually, the opposite is true. Oily skin and combination skin can benefit enormously through the use of cleansing oil. Because "like dissolves like", cleansing oil will be able to thoroughly dissolve away the excess sebum, makeup and dirt, without having a stripping effect on the skin.
After emulsifying and wash away the cleansing oil, you can follow up with your choice of gentle cleanser.
Foaming cleanser
Just as the name suggests, foaming cleanser simply means a cleanser that foams. Some foaming cleansers come out of the bottle like a mousse, others may come out like a cream and it needs foaming up between the palms. Foaming cleanser will wash away most of the oily residue from the cleansing oil (or from you skin if you are doing just the single cleanse in the morning) to give you a clean feeling after cleansing. Choose a formula with emollients and oils to prevent it from drying your skin out. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, then it is too harsh for you.

Gel cleanser
This is where it gets confusing. Most gel cleansers foam up as well. Some people would classify gel cleansers as foaming cleansers, and some gel cleansers are called "foaming gel", which is perfectly understandable.
Usually, a gel cleanser has a clear texture and it gives a smaller amount of foam. They are also very efficient in cleaning away oil and dirt. Often they are a little gentler on skin. Gel cleanser is my personal preference for summer and spring - again, it's all trial and error to choose a formulation that works for you.
Cleansers for normal skin
If you are one of the lucky few to have a normal skin type, you are spoiled for choice. You may want to experiment a few, or switch between 2 to 3 different cleansers depending on season. Remember though, using the wrong cleanser can change your skin type. If in doubt, I recommend to always go for the gentler options (cream or milk cleansers).
